Cathedral of Santa María la Mayor in Tudela (Navarra)

From today, the Cathedral of Santa María la Mayor in Tudela boasts new exterior decorative lighting thanks to a project spearheaded by the Iberdrola España Foundation, in collaboration with the Cathedral Chapter of Tudela and Tudela Town Council. The project enhances the monument's architectural appearance at night through an innovative, sustainable lighting solution that respects the historical and artistic values of the complex.

The project involves replacing the existing lighting system – which relied mainly on high-pressure sodium vapour (HPS) floodlights – with a new, state-of-the-art LED lighting system. In total, 112 LED luminaires are being installed, compared with the 52 previously in place, significantly improving the quality of the lighting and the night-time appearance of the monument.

Furthermore, the new installation reduces the total installed power from the previous 12,250 watts to 7,875 watts, achieving energy savings of over 36%, thereby helping to reduce the complex's environmental footprint and reinforce its sustainability.

The lighting design establishes a clear visual hierarchy among the cathedral’s various architectural features. The Puerta del Juicio (Judgement Door), considered one of Spain’s finest Romanesque-Gothic sculptural ensembles, becomes the main visual focal point of the western façade thanks to grazing lighting that highlights the depth of its archivolts and the intricate detail of its reliefs. The project also pays particular attention to the Puerta de Santa María, the Puerta de la Virgen, the towers and the apse, ensuring that the monument can be appreciated as a cohesive whole at night.

The use of warm 2,700 K lighting, together with high colour rendering luminaires and intelligent control systems incorporating an astronomical time switch and CASAMBI technology, allows the lighting to be adapted to different needs and uses while ensuring maximum energy efficiency and minimising light pollution.
