Cartagena's Plaza del Ayuntamiento square has hosted the inauguration of the new ornamental lighting at Cartagena City Hall, a project funded by the Iberdrola España Foundation and designed to enhance the architectural, sculptural and ornamental richness of one of the city's most representative buildings.

The inauguration was attended by Cartagena Mayor Noelia Arroyo; Carmen Conesa, Regional Minister for Tourism, Culture, Youth and Sport of the Region of Murcia; Jaime Alfonsín, chairman of the Iberdrola España Foundation; Ramón Castresana, the Foundation's director; and Miguel Ángel Cerdán, the company's institutional representative in the region, among others.

The project, in which the Iberdrola España Foundation has invested €250,000, involved the installation of approximately 2,900 state-of-the-art LED luminaires, arranged according to the building's specific features and requirements to minimise their impact on the monument. The project has an installed capacity of 2,904 W and improves energy efficiency by around 60%, further contributing to its sustainability.

The new lighting design highlights the City Hall's modernist architecture with eclectic influences, showcasing its white marble façades, pilasters, balconies, openings, cornices and decorative reliefs, as well as its iconic zinc-clad metal domes, which crown the building and are one of the most recognisable features of Cartagena's cityscape.

The use of different colour temperatures, from warm tones to white light, highlights the building's proportions and composition, accentuates the richness of its ornamental details and strengthens its presence at night as an urban and institutional landmark. The result is balanced, sustainable lighting that is consistent with the monumental character of the building and the historic and maritime surroundings in which it stands.

Jaime Alfonsín, chairman of the Iberdrola España Foundation, highlighted that preserving heritage “requires an approach that combines respect for history with innovation. This project allows us to enhance the extraordinary architectural richness of Cartagena City Hall, restoring visibility to one of Cartagena's great landmarks. At the Iberdrola España Foundation, we are working to make historical and artistic heritage more accessible, sustainable and closer to society, contributing to its preservation and passing it on to future generations.”

For Mayor Noelia Arroyo, with this new lighting, “City Hall once again has the prominence it deserves when night falls. It is one of Cartagena's most recognisable buildings and forms part of the image of the city that we want to continue promoting.” She also stressed that the project has been carried out in a more sustainable way, with state-of-the-art luminaires that are 60% more efficient and reduce the building's carbon footprint.

The mayor highlighted that this “is not an isolated project” and recalled that it “adds to the lighting of La Concepción Castle and El Molinete Archaeological Park, ensuring that our heritage can also be discovered and enjoyed after nightfall.”

“I would especially like to thank the Iberdrola España Foundation for its commitment to Cartagena. Through this collaboration, we have demonstrated that innovation and sustainability can go hand in hand in preserving our heritage and help ensure that such unique and important buildings for the people of Cartagena, such as our City Hall, continue to be landmarks of the city and its surroundings,” the mayor added.
