The Deba City Council (Gipuzkoa) and i-DE, Iberdrola España's distributor, have completed the works to relocate the electrical transformer from Gudarien Plaza to the parking lot next to the park. This action resolves a long-standing issue that affected the electricity supply during spring tides. As a result, more than 580 users will benefit from the improvement.

This is a strategic project for the safety and quality of service in the Gipuzkoa municipality. The new location guarantees protection from flooding and strengthens the reliability of the electrical grid, utilizing the most modern and digitized technology. This addresses a citizen demand that had been pending a solution for over three decades.

This project was made possible through the close collaboration between Deba City Council and i-DE. Iberdrola España fully covered the cost of the work, demonstrating its commitment to improving the service and sustainability of the area. During the execution of the project, measures were taken to minimize the impact on mobility and public transport, ensuring the continuity of essential services.

According to Alazne Txurruka, Mayor of Deba: “This achievement reflects the importance of public-private cooperation to improve the welfare of citizens. After more than three decades, we have finally managed to solve a long-standing issue affecting the supply, especially during spring tides.” She adds, “With the relocation of the transformer, Deba not only benefits from a safer and more reliable grid, but we also ensure a more robust electrical service.”

On his part, Iker Urrutia, Head of Distribution for Iberdrola España in Gipuzkoa, says: “Thanks to the involvement of the city council and i-DE's close relationship with it and other local administrations, we have been able to resolve a recurring problem and ensure the best service for our customers. Our priority is to provide a safe and efficient supply, and with this action, we reinforce the grid and contribute to Deba's development.”

Service quality above the national average

The company continues its plan to digitize its electrical grids by transforming its meters and the infrastructure that supports them into smart systems, incorporating remote control, monitoring, and automation capabilities.

The digitalization of the distribution grid will provide more information to implement additional measures for energy efficiency and sustainability, as part of the company's commitment to urgent and ambitious climate action. The deployment of the smart grid allows for responding to new network usage models and delivering better service to citizens.
