Iberdrola España has held the regional stage for the Basque Country and Cantabria in Bilbao as part of the first edition of the ‘Iberdrola FP Awards: Investing in the Future of Electricity’, an annual programme designed to discover, recognise and attract the best higher-level vocational training students specialising in electricity and electricity networks.
Twelve students from vocational training schools in Bizkaia and Gipuzkoa took part in the event, held at the company's headquarters in the Berroeta Corporate Centre in Larraskitu, Bilbao. Students from Cantabria also participated.
By province, the students from Bizkaia came from CF Somorrostro and Elorrieta Erreka Mari; those from Gipuzkoa attended Salesianos Urnieta; and those from Cantabria came from IES Ricardo Bernard and CIFP N1 Cantabria.
The initiative is aimed at second-year students on the official Higher Technician in Electrotechnical Systems and Automation (SEAS) course. It seeks to bring the company closer to vocational training centres, encourage interest in technical careers and facilitate the recruitment of qualified young people into a strategic sector undergoing significant transformation. It also aims to highlight the valuable work of training centres and their teaching staff.
Through this programme, Iberdrola España aims to help ensure generational renewal and attract specialised technical talent, while reinforcing the company's core values of safety, professional excellence, innovation, digitalisation and sustainability.
The Iberdrola FP Awards position the company as one of the first major companies in Spain's electricity sector to launch a national programme of this kind, combining recognition of merit, financial prizes and preferential access to professional opportunities at Iberdrola España. This is an unprecedented commitment to attracting and developing the country's best vocational training talent.
To this end, Iberdrola España has invited more than 50 selected training centres across Spain that offer the official SEAS higher-level qualification to participate. Nearly 200 young people underwent an initial assessment through various selection tests.
Following this first stage, held in June, between 10 and 15 students were selected from each autonomous region to take part in the in-person regional tests taking place throughout October.
The regional stage is being held in October across seven autonomous communities included in the company's talent coverage map:
- Basque Country
- Cantabria
- Valencia region
- Madrid region
- Castile and León
- Castile-La Mancha
- Extremadura
During these in-person sessions, between 60 and 70 students will take part in group exercises designed to assess their knowledge, skills and ability to handle professional situations.
Final at the Iberdrola Campus
The national stage will take place from 11 to 17 November at the Iberdrola Campus in San Agustín de Guadalix, where 20 finalists will face technical tests, workshops and group exercises designed to assess their professional skills and competencies.
During the event, a jury made up of leading figures from the sector will assess abilities that are particularly important for working in the electricity sector, including teamwork, commitment, motivation, responsibility and compliance with safety standards. The winners of the final stage will receive substantial financial prizes and priority access to internship opportunities and Iberdrola España's talent pool.
