Iberdrola España and the Military Emergencies Unit (UME) are strengthening their partnership in safety and emergency management through the signing of a General Protocol for Action aimed at jointly developing training, simulation and specialised instruction activities, with a particular focus on anticipation and preparedness.

The agreement was signed at the UME base in Torrejón de Ardoz (Madrid) by Mario Ruiz-Tagle, CEO of Iberdrola España, and Lieutenant General Francisco Javier Marcos Izquierdo, Head of the UME. It will support initiatives linked to the Atlantis Project, a simulation and decision-support system developed by the UME to enhance training and operational readiness through immersive virtual environments. The platform recreates realistic multi-risk emergency scenarios in which decisions must be taken in real time.

The partnership between the two organisations, which dates back more than a decade, includes the promotion of training activities, the organisation of technical meetings and conferences, and the exchange of expertise in safety and emergency management. Planned initiatives include joint visits to Iberdrola España’s control centres, facilities and energy assets to gain first-hand insight into their operation, associated risks and coordination procedures during emergency situations.

In addition, Iberdrola España will explore opportunities to support the training of UME intervention battalions in areas such as the specific risks associated with power plants, critical infrastructure and control centres, as well as incident prevention and response measures. At the same time, the immersive virtual reality model at the Iberdrola Campus will make it possible to carry out practical training exercises.

The agreement will initially remain in force for four years, with the option of a further four-year extension, and includes the creation of a Joint Monitoring Committee responsible for coordinating activities and overseeing the implementation of shared initiatives.
