Ignacio García Bosch, responsible for Iberdrola España’s il·lumina plan, participated in the Innotransfer session ‘Building to Endure: Innovation for Extreme Weather Phenomena’ held at Espaitec (UJI), which brought together academic experts, technology companies, and institutional representatives to present prediction, prevention, and management solutions that help strengthen the resilience of the region.

During his presentation, García Bosch explained the project Iberdrola España is developing to redesign the infrastructure damaged by the DANA, in which the company is investing 100 million euros to build a future-proof grid incorporating resilience measures and the latest digitalization standards.

The il·lumina plan is involving design changes to the facilities, as well as the use of innovative technology that will benefit more than 650,000 users by providing a stronger grid prepared for potential future extreme weather events.

Since we launched the project, we have already surpassed 80% of its execution, having completed the cleaning and renewal of more than 500 transformation centers and the construction of more than 350 medium-voltage supports that were affected. We are also carrying out work in around twenty transformer substations, some of which include raising them by more than a meter and a half above the current surface,” emphasized the head of the il·lumina plan.

“La aceleración de las inversiones nos permite crecer a un ritmo superior al previsto. Estos resultados reflejan el éxito de un modelo sostenible y nos animan a seguir trabajando hacia la descarbonización del planeta.”

García Bosch highlighted that, to tackle this challenge, “Iberdrola España has created a specific team of 35 people who are fully dedicated to the project’s development, involving approximately 1,000 people from contractor companies, most of which are locally based. We are also working with companies from Castellón, such as Obremo, part of Nealis, who are helping us advance in the redesign of the grid affected by the DANA.”

The head of the il·lumina plan also wanted to highlight that, during the event that took place over a year ago, Iberdrola España employees in the province collaborated on the initial restoration of the electrical supply and the repair of affected facilities. Despite the complexity and demands of the ongoing project, “to date, the work is being carried out according to the planned schedule, and we continue with the goal of reaching 90% completion by the end of the year, with the plan to finish by 2026.
