Transports Metropolitans de Barcelona (TMB) has awarded Iberdrola España the contract for the management and acquisition of up to 80 gigawatt hours in Energy Saving Certificates (CAE). The tender, valued at €14 million, will last for four years, until 2030.

Of the total associated volume of 80 gigawatt hours of energy savings 56.7 gigawatt hours have already been generated through recent actions in Barcelona's public transport network. These include the incorporation of 133 more efficient buses, with an estimated saving of 33 gigawatt hours, and various unique actions in the Barcelona Metropolitan Railway, which add up to another 23.7 gigawatt hours.

The contract also includes a further 22.3 GWh planned for implementation over the coming years, consolidating TMB as one of the main generators of energy savings in the public sector. The company's Bus Agenda for 2030 envisages the evolution towards a fully zero-emission fleet, replacing all its combustion and hybrid vehicles.

This agreement reinforces Iberdrola España's position as a leader in the purchase and management of energy saving certificates (CAE), in line with its latest operations with major transport operators in Spain. It will also allow TMB to monetise the significant volume of energy savings that its future decarbonisation plans will generate, which in turn will drive the implementation of new projects. In addition, the contract includes the compensation that TMB has generated so far after replacing a large part of its fleet with more efficient and zero-emission vehicles.

With this new alliance, Iberdrola España continues to promote projects that accelerate decarbonisation and electrification, strategic pillars for moving towards more sustainable mobility and a more efficient energy system. For TMB, this represents significant support in addressing its plans to improve bus service in Barcelona, making it more efficient and contributing to more sustainable mobility in the city, which will improve air quality.

Since the end of 2024, TMB already has 25% of zero-emission vehicles in its fleet, with 46 hydrogen vehicles and 196 fully electric buses in service. In February 2025, the company launched a new tender to purchase 19 electric articulated (18-metre) night-charging vehicles, which will arrive in 2026 and replace vehicles currently in circulation.

‘This agreement with TMB reaffirms the importance of CAEs as a real tool for advancing decarbonisation. For Iberdrola España, supporting a public entity that is committed to electrification and efficiency is an opportunity to accelerate cleaner and more sustainable mobility,’ said Juan Miguel Bailón, Iberdrola España's commercial representative in Catalonia.

TMB President Laia Bonet explained that ‘in addition to the environmental improvements we are pursuing, the energy savings we have achieved also allow us to earn €14 million, which will be used to improve public transport services.’ In this way, Bonet added, ‘not only are we fighting climate change and making cities more environmentally sustainable, but we are also obtaining an economic benefit that is reinvested in public transport itself.’
