Iberdrola España and the Padre Vinjoy Foundation have teamed up to launch a pioneering solar community in the Asturian capital as part of their commitment to innovation and energy efficiency.

The new installation will be located on the roof of this century-old institution with a strong social commitment. The collaboration between Iberdrola España and the Padre Vinjoy Foundation in the solar community will prevent the emission of nearly 802 tons of CO2 into the atmosphere over the next 30 years.

In addition to reducing the electricity bill for the century-old institution itself, residents within a 2-kilometer radius will be able to benefit from the advantages of renewable self-consumption, without the need for their own infrastructure or investment.

This community self-consumption model allows users to share 100% renewable energy generated from a single photovoltaic installation located near their homes, in this case, on the roof of the institution.

Iberdrola España is making the investment in this installation, which will consist of 261 solar panels, with a total capacity of 120 kilowatts (kW), enough to produce about 145 megawatt-hours (MWh) annually.

Thanks to this solar community, around 184 families will be able to participate and save on their electricity bills by consuming part of the energy produced locally by this installation. For its part, the Padre Vinjoy Foundation, an Oviedo-based institution linked to vulnerable groups and social action in Asturias, will save up to 30% on its electricity bill.

"This pioneering initiative is a significant milestone, marking Iberdrola España's commitment to innovation in energy solutions, sustainability, and support for the regions where we operate, bringing self-consumption to 320 families in Oviedo," says Borja Cancela, Commercial Director of Iberdrola España in Asturias.

Adolfo Rivas, the Managing Director of the Padre Vinjoy Foundation, emphasized that "this decision not only represents a step forward in terms of environmental responsibility, but it also brings significant benefits to the residents near our institution."

Leader in self-consumption

As part of its commitment to accelerating the energy transition, Iberdrola España not only promotes solar energy's integration into the energy system through its networks but also leads the market in managing self-consumption customers in the country.

Iberdrola España has reached 1,000 Solar Communities in Spain, enabling over 100,000 families to access self-consumption. In 2015, the company was a pioneer in offering self-consumption to its customers. Aware that more than two-thirds of the country’s population lives in multi-story buildings, in 2019, it launched Solar Communities, a solution that allows any resident within 2 km of an installation to access 100% renewable local energy.

Currently, more than 3.5 million people in all Spanish provinces live within the service area of an Iberdrola España Solar Community, which are located on rooftops of various types of buildings such as churches, schools, industrial warehouses, or shopping centers, among others.

Iberdrola España's Solar Communities allow customers to enjoy all the benefits of solar energy without the need for their own solar panels or any investment, as the company handles the installation and finds the best location.

Iberdrola España’s collective self-consumption solutions have made self-consumption available to any customer, regardless of whether they have their own rooftop. Additionally, customers in this segment benefit from the Solar Plan, a competitive electricity tariff for hours when there is no sunlight, as they self-supply during the day from their own installation.

Self-consumption solar systems can lead to annual savings of 30% on the electricity bill for communities of neighbors, 50% for businesses, and up to 70% for single-family homes. These savings come from three sources: the energy produced by the installation that the user does not need to buy, compensation for surplus energy not consumed that is fed back into the grid, and savings from lower taxes.

Regarding the possibility of compensating for energy fed into the grid, Iberdrola España customers have access to the Solar Cloud service, which allows them to compensate for surpluses beyond the energy term, even redirecting them for consumption in another residence.
