Iberdrola España has launched the programme of activities to mark the 125th anniversary of the Iberdrola Group, of which it forms part, with the renovation of the lighting system in the Chapel of the Royal Palace of Madrid, one of the great treasures of Spain’s historical and artistic heritage.
The new lighting was inaugurated by the President of the Fundación Iberdrola España, Jaime Alfonsín, and the President of National Heritage, Ana de la Cueva.
This event marks the beginning of a series of lighting projects for iconic buildings and monuments that the company will carry out throughout Spain in 2026. These include the Miguelete Tower in Valencia, Valladolid City Hall, the cathedrals of Albacete and Málaga, the Roman Theatre of Mérida, and the Basilica of Nuestra Señora de Begoña in Bilbao.
The Chapel of the Royal Palace stands out for its architectural and artistic richness, featuring frescoes, sculptures and ornamental elements of enormous historical value. As the setting for solemn ceremonies and court events, it is a living testimony to the history of Spain and its monarchy. The chapel is accessed from the main gallery of the Royal Palace, one of the few official residences of heads of state open to the public, which welcomes around 1.5 million visitors from all over the world each year.
This initiative is the result of an agreement between Iberdrola España and National Heritage and highlights the potential of collaboration between public and private entities to preserve and enhance heritage and to promote cultural tourism through innovative initiatives.
The project covers the main nave and adjoining spaces, including the reliquary and the sacristy, where new state-of-the-art LED projectors have been installed. These reduce energy consumption by 94% and are perfectly adapted to the heritage, architectural and aesthetic requirements of the setting. The result is an efficient and sustainable solution that enhances the beauty of the entire Royal Chapel while being seamlessly integrated into the monument.
