Iberdrola España and Burger King have signed a new long-term power purchase agreement (PPA) for 34 MW of photovoltaic (PV) energy, which now totals 109 MW to meet the annual demand of more than 900 restaurants.
This new agreement will enable Iberdrola España to supply the fast food chain with a total of 1,900 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of photovoltaic energy, thereby contributing to accelerate Burger King's transition to renewable energy, enhancing its energy security.
Both companies have been working together for years to advance the electrification of their services. In fact, Iberdrola España and BP Pulse are managing 348 electric vehicle charging points at 173 of the brand's restaurants in Spain, also providing management and operational optimisation services. In 2021, both companies signed a collaboration agreement to install these charging points.
David Martinez, Business Director of Customers Spain at Iberdrola, stated: "Iberdrola España and Burger King have been working together for years to promote the electrification of the restaurant chain as the most efficient solution. Collaborations like this are essential to support the growth of renewable energy. The PPA is the ideal tool for customers who want to secure renewable energy consumption at a fixed, competitive price over the long term."
According to Jorge Carvalho, CEO of Burger King Spain, "We continue to expand our commitment to the use of green energy in partnership with Iberdrola España, aiming to make our restaurants more energy-efficient. Promoting clean energy is essential for our company, and we will continue to invest in partnerships like this that help us move forward in this direction."
