Iberdrola España and the AECC join forces for the 2nd Walk Against Cancer in Bilbao

For the second year in a row the capital of Bizkaia will host the charity walk "Bilbao en Marcha Contra el Cáncer" which will take place on Sunday 14 June.
With this initiative the Association Against Cancer in Bizkaia aims to promote healthy lifestyles and raise awareness particularly among men about the importance of cancer prevention and research.

Iberdrola España and the Spanish Association Against Cancer (AECC) are joining forces. On Sunday 14 June the plaza in front of the Bilbao Maritime Museum will host the 2nd Bilbao Walk Against Cancer, a charity walk for the whole family.

The 2nd Bilbao Walk, with Iberdrola España as the main sponsor, sponsored by El Correo, Lagun Aro, CIC bioGUNE, Idom and Solán de Cabras, with the collaboration of the BBK Banking Foundation and Eroski and institutional support from the City of Bilbao, focuses on promoting healthy lifestyle habits among the population and raising awareness — especially among men — about the importance of cancer prevention and research, specifically regarding prostate cancer.

Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men and is the third leading cause of cancer-related death, behind only lung and colorectal cancer. According to the latest data from the Spanish Cancer Epidemiological Information System (SIEC) nearly 1,800 new cases of prostate cancer were diagnosed in the Basque Country in 2023.

In this context Juan Ibarretxe, Bilbao City Council's Councilor for Social Action, highlighted in his welcoming remarks the importance of initiatives like this one in raising awareness about the reality of cancer and engaging society in the fight against this disease. "We at the City of Bilbao wish to express our appreciation and support, as well as our commitment to stand by and actively participate in this initiative. Because building a city where no one is left behind also means getting involved in causes like this 2nd Bilbao Walk Against Cancer," Ibarretxe emphasized.

For his part, Eduardo Lobato, Northern Sales Manager for Iberdrola España, noted that "noted that the partnership between the Cancer Association and Iberdrola España began in 2015, and since then more than €6 million have been raised for both research and improving the quality of life for patients. This year marks the 125th anniversary of the founding of the Iberdrola Group here in Bilbao, where we maintain our headquarters. For this reason it is doubly important to once again host this charity race at our home and ensure it is a success once more. At Iberdrola Spain we encourage the people of Biscay to sign up to run, enjoy a healthy day and contribute to a worthy cause. Thank you to the Association Against Cancer. On 14 june we will all be there for health and against disease. It will be a collective success."

In the words of María Milagrosa Gullón, president of the Cancer Association in Bizkaia, "given this reality, research is essential, as it enables progress in new diagnostic methods and more effective treatments to increase survival rates and improve the quality of life for prostate cancer patients". In this regard the president of the Association in Bizkaia highlighted the organization's commitment to this disease through its current support for six prostate cancer research projects at two research centers, CIC bioGUNE and EHU, allocating more than €800,000.

Meanwhile Ixone Zubieta, head of the People Division at the BBK Banking Foundation, highlighted the organization's commitment to well-being and equal opportunities for all, "as only then can we affirm that Bizkaia is a prosperous, cohesive, inclusive and sustainable region". She also encouraged the public to participate in the march because "cancer is a reality we cannot turn our backs on", adding that "initiatives like Bilbao en Marcha demonstrate that when we come together, when society responds, we are capable of making a real impact. Every person who joins is helping to create new opportunities for thousands of people".

Bilbao en Marcha: Against Prostate Cancer

In this second edition the organization aims to "fill the streets of Bilbao once again" and exceed the 2,500 participants from the previous Bilbao en Marcha Against Cancer, who will walk a route of approximately 4 kilometers free of architectural barriers, starting and ending at the plaza in front of the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao.

In addition on the morning of 14 June there will be an activities and information area for all ages (workshops, exhibition, photo op etc.) to raise awareness about the importance of prostate cancer prevention and research.
