Fundación Iberdrola España and the Mérida Consortium have signed an agreement to upgrade the stage lighting at the Roman Theatre in Mérida
- Both organisations have signed an agreement for the lighting refurbishment of the theatre's stage, which UNESCO designated a World Heritage Site in 1993 and which is considered one of the best-preserved Roman monumental complexes in the world.
- The project, with an investment of around €400,000, will incorporate state-of-the-art LED technology to improve the architectural and artistic lighting of the monument, increase its energy efficiency and reduce CO₂ emissions.
This morning the theatre hosted the signing of the collaboration agreement between the Consortium of the Historic, Artistic and Archaeological Monumental City of Mérida and the Fundación Iberdrola España to carry out the lighting refurbishment of the iconic stage of the Roman Theatre of Mérida, one of the most representative symbols of Spain's historical and cultural heritage.
The project, with an investment of around €400,000, will modernise the lighting system by incorporating state-of-the-art LED technology, which will provide more efficient, sustainable lighting that is respectful of the heritage environment. As well as improving the monument's energy efficiency the project will help to highlight the grandeur and architectural richness of the stage, optimising the distribution of light across its most distinctive features and enhancing the experience for visitors and spectators.
Jaime Alfonsín, president of the Fundación Iberdrola España, stated: "Heritage is one of the finest expressions of our collective identity." Thanks to this project the stage of the Roman Theatre in Mérida will once again shine with more efficient and sustainable lighting, highlighting the beauty of an exceptional monument and reinforcing the Foundation's commitment to the conservation and promotion of culture in Extremadura as well as the protection of a heritage legacy enjoyed by thousands of people every year".
The Regional Government of Extremadura has expressed its gratitude to the Fundación Iberdrola España for its commitment to this project whilst noting that it demonstrates how collaboration between public institutions and the private sector can lead to concrete actions that help preserve our heritage whilst also incorporating more efficient and sustainable solutions.
