Photovoltaic panel project at Mondragón University, Bilbao
The Bilbao AS Fabrik campus of the Mondragón University in Zorrozaurre, Bilbao is joining the self-consumption movement with the help of Iberdrola España. The solar photovoltaic installation consists of around 45 solar panels and will enable an annual self-consumption of 20.5 MWh and savings of around 5% off the campus's electricity use. The installation has a total power of 20.25 kW. The solar panels have been placed on the largest roof of the main building so that they are not visible from the street and are integrated into its architecture.
This self-consumption initiative completes the solar panel project, which will be fully operational in the coming weeks at the University of Mondragón's Bilbao campus. The shared self-consumption photovoltaic installation will share the energy generated at the University of Mondragón itself with the Digipen Institute of Technology, a European campus with a location in Zorrozaurre, the oldest video game university in the world, which was established in the capital of Biscay in 2010.
This renewable project demonstrates the University of Mondragón and DigiPen Institute of Technology Europe Bilbao’s commitment to sustainability and is part of the ATELIER project, which aims to develop a Positive Energy District (PED) in Bilbao, with sustainability and carbon neutrality as its main ambitions. It is part of the Bilbao AS Fabrik ecosystem, a strategic project of the Bilbao City Council to turn the artificial island of Zorrozaurre into a talent hub in Bilbao-Bizkaia. Similarly, it aims to improve the competitiveness of local companies and consolidate Zorrozaurre as a benchmark for innovation and for Industry 4.0 and the digital economy.
Iberdrola España, leader in self-consumption in Spain
Iberdrola España leads the photovoltaic self-consumption market in Spain. As part of its commitment to accelerating the energy transition and developing new products that improve energy efficiency and savings, in 2015 the company became the first in its industry to integrate self-consumption solutions into its service offering.
Self-consumption solar systems can mean savings of 30% on annual bills for neighbourhood communities, 50% for companies and businesses, and up to 70% for single-family homes. These savings come about in three ways: the energy produced by the installation that the user doesn’t have to purchase, compensation for surplus energy not consumed that is fed back into the grid, and savings due to lower taxes.
