Iberdrola España, through its Fundación, brings the travelling exhibition El Prado en las Calles to Lorca

From 14 May to 14 June, Calle Corredera will showcase some of the most iconic works from the Museo Nacional del Prado, giving residents and visitors the chance to enjoy the gallery’s masterpieces in the heart of the city.
Since 2019, the exhibition, promoted by the Fundación Iberdrola España, has travelled to numerous regions across the country and will complete its tour of the Region of Murcia in San Javier.

For the next few weeks, Lorca will become an open-air museum with the arrival of El Prado en las Calles, an exhibition that brings some of the most celebrated paintings from the Museo Nacional del Prado to Calle Corredera, beside Plaza de la Concordia. The exhibition offers families, school groups, young people and older visitors the opportunity to discover, or rediscover, some of the museum’s greatest masterpieces free of charge and in an accessible setting.

The exhibition features 50 life-size reproductions of landmark works from the history of painting by artists including Diego Velázquez, Francisco de Goya, Hieronymus Bosch, Peter Paul Rubens and El Greco. Displayed on large-format panels, the reproductions allow visitors to appreciate details and scenes that would normally only be seen inside the museum itself.

Each piece is accompanied by concise explanatory texts and captions that provide insight into the artist, the story behind the painting and its significance. As a result, the exhibition also becomes an educational experience for visitors of all ages. To further enrich the visit, every bilingual information panel includes QR codes linking to additional content on the Prado Museum’s collections.

The opening ceremony was attended by Fulgencio Gil Jódar, Mayor of Lorca; Patricio Sánchez López, Director-General of Heritage at the Regional Ministry of Tourism, Culture, Youth and Sport of the Region of Murcia; Fernando Pérez Suescun, Management Officer at the Prado Museum’s General Coordination of Education; together with Ramón Castresana, Director of the Fundación Iberdrola España, and Miguel Ángel Cerdán, the company’s regional representative.

El Prado en las Calles invites visitors to slow down, take a closer look and immerse themselves in the richness of Western art through some of its most influential schools of painting, including the Spanish, Flemish, German, Dutch, French and Italian traditions.

According to Fulgencio Gil Jódar, the exhibition is “a unique opportunity not only for art lovers, but for society as a whole, to experience at close quarters some of the Prado’s most iconic and representative works, while reinforcing this City Council’s commitment to bringing culture into public spaces and making it accessible to everyone”.

He added that it is no coincidence that Lorca “has been chosen as one of the main venues for this wonderful travelling exhibition, which has also formed part of the Museum Night programme, attracting thousands of visitors to admire masterpieces from across the centuries. I would like to thank the Fundación Iberdrola España, the Directorate-General for Heritage and the Prado Museum’s General Coordination of Education for making this possible and for joining Lorca City Council in its commitment to bringing culture closer to the public and filling streets and squares with artistic life.”

Ramón Castresana, Director of the Fundación Iberdrola España, said the exhibition “reflects the Fundación’s commitment to promoting knowledge and enhancing cultural heritage by making art openly accessible, educational and engaging for everyone”.

He also stressed that collaboration with leading cultural institutions “is essential to developing projects that create a positive and lasting social impact”, while also marking Iberdrola’s 125th anniversary and highlighting the company’s broad range of activities across Spain.
