Iberdrola España, through its Foundation, is promoting "El Prado en las Calles" in Murcia

Until 10 May the Paseo Alfonso X will host the Prado Museum's most iconic works, much to the delight of the people of Murcia and anyone else wishing to visit and enjoy this exhibition in the very heart of the city
The exhibition, sponsored by the Iberdrola España Foundation, has already been to Cehegín and will soon be on display in Lorca and San Javier as part of its tour of the Region of Murcia

The Paseo de Alfonso X in Murcia will host the travelling exhibition "El Prado en las Calles" from today until 10 May. Both the people of Murcia and anyone wishing to enjoy the Prado Museum's most iconic works will be able to enjoy a unique open-air cultural tour, taking in 50 large-format photographic reproductions of some of the national art gallery's most iconic works.

Visitors will be able to enjoy the great masters of painting such as Goya, Velázquez, Rubens, Dürer, Rembrandt, Bosch, Caravaggio and Sorolla and discover the history of Western art through their works. The Prado Museum, Iberdrola España through its foundation and the Regional Ministry of Tourism, Culture, Youth and Sport of the Region of Murcia have collaborated to make this exhibition possible.

The opening ceremony was attended by Patricio Sánchez, Director General of Heritage at the Regional Ministry of Tourism, Culture, Youth and Sport of the Region of Murcia; Diego Avilés Correas, Councillor for Culture and Identity at Murcia City Council; Fernando Pérez Suescun, Management Officer at the General Coordination of Education of the Prado Museum; as well as Jaime Alfonsín, President of the Iberdrola España Foundation; Ramón Castresana, director of the Foundation and Miguel Ángel Cerdán, the company's regional representative.

"Murcia continues to strive for excellence, and we certainly do not want just any proposal for our city. With initiatives such as ‘El Prado en las Calles’, we are taking another step forward in this firm commitment to bringing first-class culture to all Murcians, making universal art accessible and allowing residents and visitors to enjoy, right in the public space, some of the Prado Museum's most iconic works", emphasised Diego Avilés.

The councillor recalled the words of the painter Ramón Gaya, who said that, "when one thinks of the Prado from a distance, it is not perceived as a museum, but as a true homeland". In this regard, he noted that "today that cultural homeland is taking up residence in Murcia for a few days. We feel deeply fortunate to be able to host this exhibition and I would like to extend a special thank you to the Iberdrola Foundation for its commitment, which goes beyond its remit as a company, helping to bring art and culture closer to the public and to continue consolidating Murcia as a leading cultural hub".

Patricio Sánchez, Director-General of Cultural Heritage at the Regional Ministry of Tourism, Culture, Youth and Sport of the Murcia region, emphasised that: "the exhibition, organised in collaboration with the regional government, aims to make culture accessible to everyone through an engaging and educational approach to the great masters of all eras and schools via works of universal renown; an experience that can serve as an incentive to see the originals first-hand and discover all the wonders housed in the many excellent museums in Murcia, the Region and around the world".

Jaime Alfonsín emphasised that through this initiative "the Iberdrola España Foundation continues to demonstrate its commitment to promoting art and culture, bringing them to public and open spaces so that citizens can discover the legacy of one of the world's most important museums".

In this regard Alfonsín invited those present and the general public to visit the exhibition, recalling the importance of the company's 125th anniversary celebrations, which will feature various activities across Spain for the enjoyment of all citizens.

Following the opening ceremony the Prado Museum catalogues joined the documentary collections of the Murcia Municipal Library and those present visited the exhibition and enjoyed a stroll through the display.
To enhance the experience each bilingual information panel features QR codes providing access to additional content on the art gallery's various collections.

Since it began its tour of Spain in 2019, 'El Prado en las Calles' has attracted large numbers of visitors at various locations, including Castilla-La Mancha, Castilla y León, Extremadura, Andalusia and the Valencia region. In total the exhibition has visited 58 municipalities.

Fundación Iberdrola España focuses one of its main areas of activity on the care and maintenance of our country's cultural and artistic heritage. It has collaborated with the Museo del Prado since 2010 by supporting the art gallery's conservation and restoration programmes, as well as through the provision of four annual grants for young restorers.

Furthermore in 2019 it joined the Special Programme to Commemorate the Bicentenary of the Prado Museum and following its success this travelling exhibition was rolled out across Spain.Since 2011 the Iberdrola Spain Foundation has allocated a total of €13 million to the Art and Culture sector, which focuses its resources on various programmes, such as the Illuminations programme, which covers the design, execution and funding of artistic lighting projects in unique buildings and monuments of cultural interest; it also runs the Restorations Programme, which supports the restoration workshops of leading museums in the conservation of their pictorial and artistic heritage.

In the Region of Murcia highlights include the illumination of the Basilica of La Vera Cruz and its walled surroundings in Caravaca de la Cruz and institutional collaborations with the Cartagena Roman Theatre Museum Foundation since 2015 and the Salzillo Museum since 2013.
