Visit by students from the Salesianos Padre Aramburu Secondary School to the Villímar substation

I-DE, the electricity distribution company of Iberdrola España, welcomed a group of students from Salesianos Padre Aramburu Secondary School to the Villímar transformer substation, located in the neighbourhood of the same name in the city of Burgos, in northern Spain.

The Villímar substation forms part of the electricity transmission and distribution network and is equipped with two transformers rated at 100 and 93 megavolt-amperes (MVA), which step down very high voltage electricity (220 kilovolts — kV) to high voltage levels (45 kV). Through a total of eleven high-voltage lines, the facility supplies electricity to a large part of the province of Burgos and ensures a reliable power supply to several areas in the north-east of the city.

During the visit, students attended a technical session delivered by José Antonio Lara, head of i-DE’s Burgos Technical Service Unit (UTS). He explained the operation of the substation’s main equipment — including auxiliary services, control systems, protection systems and transformers — as well as key aspects related to maintenance activities and environmental management.

Lara also introduced students to the criteria used to identify and assess smart grids, fundamental electricity concepts, the effects of electric current on the human body, and occupational risk prevention practices applied in the operation and maintenance of energy infrastructure.

The Villímar substation supplies more than 82,000 customers across both urban and rural areas of Burgos and meets the electricity needs of the most important industries located in the Gamonal industrial estate, one of the city’s main industrial hubs.

The purpose of the visit was to provide students with a practical technical overview of how an electricity substation operates, including maintenance procedures, safety protocols and work organisation. The initiative forms part of i-DE’s commitment to promoting knowledge of the energy sector and encouraging interest among future professionals.

Students also had the opportunity to raise questions and learn first-hand about the operation of the facility, which is owned by Iberdrola España.
