Noelia Arroyo, Mayor of Cartagena, and Jaime Alfonsín, President of the Fundación Iberdrola España, after signing the agreement for the lighting of Cartagena Town Hall
Cartagena City Hall will unveil a renewed exterior lighting system following the signing of an agreement between the Fundación Iberdrola España and the City Council. The project, backed by an investment of €250,000, includes the installation of state-of-the-art LED lighting designed to reduce the building’s energy consumption while enhancing the distinctive beauty of this landmark in the Region of Murcia.
The signing ceremony, held at Cartagena City Hall, was attended by the Mayor of Cartagena, Noelia Arroyo; Jaime Alfonsín, President of the Fundación Iberdrola España; and Miguel Ángel Cerdán, Iberdrola España’s institutional delegate in the region. Noemi Barbero of VBNB Lighting, the architect leading the project, also participated and provided further details about the new lighting design.
Jaime Alfonsín
President of the Fundación Iberdrola España
Jaime Alfonsín stated that “through this agreement, the Fundación once again demonstrates its commitment to restoring, protecting and preserving Spain’s rich artistic and cultural heritage. In this case, it concerns one of Cartagena’s most emblematic buildings, City Hall, through more efficient and sustainable lighting that enhances and integrates with the monument’s architectural beauty.”
Alfonsín also recalled the Fundación Iberdrola España’s ties with the Region of Murcia, highlighting the ornamental lighting of the Basilica of La Vera Cruz in November 2025, and emphasised “the major milestones still to come this year as part of the company’s 125th anniversary.”
Mayor Noelia María Arroyo noted that light “has always been fundamental to City Hall: when construction began in 1900, it was one of the first public buildings specifically designed to be illuminated by electric light. With this new exterior ornamental lighting, the building recovers that tradition and gains greater presence in the city, with lower consumption and fewer emissions. It joins other monumental lighting projects such as those at our Medieval Castle and the El Molinete Archaeological Park. We are grateful to the Iberdrola España Foundation for its collaboration in preserving and enhancing a monument that, beyond its architectural value, is the heart of municipal life.”
125 years of light: a comprehensive programme for society
This agreement forms part of the extensive programme of activities planned for 2026 to mark the 125th anniversary of the Iberdrola Group. The programme includes art exhibitions, music festivals, technology showcases and social initiatives. Under the slogan 125 Light Years, the company will launch initiatives aimed at employees, customers, shareholders and the general public to bring its legacy closer to society and, above all, to share its vision for the future and its strong commitment to the communities in which it operates.
Iberdrola España, promoting art and culture
One of Iberdrola España’s main areas of activity, through its foundation, focuses on the protection, conservation and enhancement of Spain’s historic and artistic heritage. The Lighting Programme aims to carry out interventions in landmark buildings to install or upgrade interior and/or exterior lighting systems, contributing to the preservation and appreciation of cultural heritage.
In the Region of Murcia, notable projects include the exterior ornamental lighting of the Basilica of La Vera Cruz and its walled enclosure in Caravaca de la Cruz, which holds perpetual Jubilee status as one of the five holy pilgrimage sites of Christianity (Rome, Jerusalem, Santiago de Compostela, Santo Toribio de Liébana and Caravaca de la Cruz). The Foundation has also collaborated with the Cartagena Roman Theatre Museum Foundation since 2015 and with the Salzillo Museum since 2013.
