Iberdrola España Storage Batteries

Iberdrola España has been granted more than €170 million in funding for energy storage projects from the first call for innovative energy storage projects co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund (FEDER) 2021-2027, awarded by the Institute for Diversification and Energy Saving (IDAE).

Specifically, the company will allocate €130 million to co-finance 11 Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), €22 million to three industrial thermal storage projects, and €18 million to the expansion of a pumped storage project.

The batteries, located in Extremadura (4), Galicia (3), Castilla y León (2), Asturias (1), and Andalusia (1), will have an average power of 35-40 MW, with 10 of them featuring shared access, enabling synergies between projects. Five will be hybridized with photovoltaic technology, five with wind energy, and one will be a stand-alone system (operating independently).

The three industrial thermal storage projects will have a total capacity of 190 MWht and will be located in Andalusia, the Valencian Community, and Galicia, serving the food and beverage, ceramics, and canning industries.

The pumped storage project will enhance the capacity of the Torrejón plant, located between the Torrejón-Tajo and Alcántara reservoirs.

Iberdrola España's commitment to energy storage

Iberdrola España promotes efficient energy storage as a key lever for electrification, decarbonization, and the energy transition. The company focuses on large-scale storage through pumped hydroelectric power plants and small-scale storage through Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS).

Iberdrola España is a leader in energy storage via hydroelectric and pumped storage generation, with 4.5 GW of installed capacity. Notable pumped hydroelectric plants in Iberdrola’s portfolio include La Muela, Villarino, Támega, and Santiago-Sil-Xares.

Iberdrola España has been a pioneer in developing energy storage with lithium-ion batteries. In 2021, the company became the first to install a battery hybridized with photovoltaic technology at Campo Arañuelo III (Extremadura).

The company also operates a 20 MWh battery in Puertollano, which stores energy from a nearby solar plant to generate green hydrogen for the largest industrial green hydrogen plant in Europe, as well as two in the Basque Country: one in Abadiño (Biscay), connected to the evacuation of the Oiz wind farm, which can operate independently from any installation, and another in Álava, which stores wind energy from the Elgea-Urkilla wind farm.

Currently, Iberdrola España has six more batteries in advanced construction stages in Castilla y León, Extremadura, Castilla-La Mancha, and Andalusia, recognized as Strategic Projects for Economic Recovery and Transformation (PERTE) in its renewable energy, green hydrogen, and storage division (ERHA).
