Iberdrola España has been recognized by the pharmaceutical multinational Bayer for driving industrial electrification through innovative solutions, a key aspect for meeting European decarbonization targets.
TThe German-based company distinguishes key partners with the Bayer Procurement Decarbonization Accelerator Award for contributing to sustainability, efficiency, and emissions reduction in its operations and processes through clean technologies and renewable energy.
In Iberdrola España’s case, Bayer valued the various agreements and solutions aimed at electrification and decarbonization of its processes. Among them is the long-term power purchase agreement (PPA) signed by both companies, which marked a milestone in the pharmaceutical sector in Spain. Thanks to this contract, Iberdrola supplies renewable electricity from the Francisco Pizarro photovoltaic plant (Cáceres) to nine Bayer facilities. Both companies also maintain similar contracts in other countries, such as Italy, where the energy comes from the Montefiascone plant.
Additionally, this year they strengthened their strategic collaboration with another pioneering initiative: the first heat supply project (Heat Purchase Agreement) in Spain, through which Iberdrola will electrify Bayer’s plant in La Felguera (Asturias), where all acetylsalicylic acid for aspirin production is manufactured. The project involves converting renewable energy into steam using a molten salt thermal storage system, which will reduce CO₂ emissions by 8,000 tons per year.
Solutions for industrial electrification
Industrial processes account for 25% of energy consumption in the European Union, and most heat is generated using fossil fuels. Electrifying these activities is key to reducing emissions and decreasing dependence on volatile markets.
In this context, electrifying industrial demand is essential to progress toward a secure, self-sufficient, competitive, and sustainable energy model. The Iberdrola Group, of which Iberdrola España is a part, promotes this transformation within its strategic plan, which includes investments in grids, renewable generation, storage, and tailored solutions for industrial clients. These include renewable electricity supply, electric vehicle infrastructure, and technologies for decarbonized heat such as electric boilers, heat pumps, and thermal storage systems.
In fact, Iberdrola leads the European power purchase agreement market, according to the Pexapark Renewables Market Outlook 2025 report. PPA contracts allow companies to consume clean energy at a fixed, long-term price—a tool that provides stability and competitiveness, fosters decarbonization, and reduces industrial emissions.
