i-DE, Iberdrola España's distribution arm, has presented its planned investment programme for the autonomous community of Extremadura for the period 2027 to 2029 to the Regional Government of Extremadura. This plan envisages an estimated investment of €78 million over the next three years, with initiatives aimed at grid expansion, asset renewal and the digitalisation of the electricity system to meet growing energy demand.

The meeting was attended by Óscar Villanueva, i-DE's director for the Western region; David Martín Arevalillo, head of the Network business in Extremadura; and Miguel Ángel Díez, head of Regional Planning, who presented the investment plan to Raquel Pastor, Director-General for Industry, Energy and Mines at the Regional Government of Extremadura.

During the meeting the main lines of action planned for the next investment cycle were outlined, with particular emphasis on strengthening the electricity distribution network in the region. These measures aim to facilitate the connection of new demand, both industrial and residential, against a backdrop of the economy's progressive electrification.

The plan also includes investments aimed at upgrading existing infrastructure to improve the quality of supply. Furthermore the plan continues to prioritise grid digitalisation solutions designed to optimise real-time management.

mong the plan's most significant initiatives are the reinforcement of the distribution infrastructure in the city of Cáceres through the construction of new 45 kilovolt lines. Also included are the reinforcement of the networks in the west of the province of Cáceres, the refurbishment and expansion of substations in Valencia de Alcántara, Trujillo, Talarrubias and Castuera and the improvement of the supply in the Alagón Valley area, amongst others. These investments are complemented by other initiatives spread across the entire region, forming a comprehensive and structural plan.

During the meeting both parties agreed that investment in the electrical networks is essential to enable the growth and sustainability of regions. In this regard the urgency of approving the necessary regulations to modify the current investment constraints imposed on Spain's electrical networks by the existing regulatory framework was emphasised.

They also noted that the transmission network plan currently undergoing approval should be geared towards facilitating growth, including the infrastructure necessary to meet the anticipated increase in demand on Extremadura's distribution network.

As discussed at the meeting coordination between administrations and operators is crucial for streamlining infrastructure development processes and ensuring supply meets the highest quality standards.

These lines of action form part of the energy company's overall strategy, which positions electrification as the central pillar for advancing the decarbonisation of the economy. The development of smart grids and robust networks is considered a key element in facilitating the integration of renewable energy, the promotion of electric vehicles and the transformation of industrial processes towards models with lower CO2 emissions.

Over 70 substations in Extremadura

In Extremadura i-DE manages over 10,600 kilometres of low- and medium-voltage lines and over 2,000 kilometres of high- and very-high-voltage lines as well as 3,467 transformer stations in operation and 74 substations. This network serves both households and businesses across the entire autonomous community.

Thanks to these facilities i-DE now has a modern, digitalised network in the region that is ready to meet the needs and challenges posed by the electrification of the economy in Extremadura. The investment made by i-DE in the region over many years has also led to a substantial improvement in the quality of supply it offers its customers.
