The Iberdrola Group, of which Iberdrola España is a part, has been awarded eight projects in the first European auction for the decarbonization of industrial heat, organized by the European Commission's Innovation Fund — an initiative that will accelerate the replacement of fossil fuels with renewable energy in energy-intensive industrial sectors.

The initiatives, based on the direct electrification of heat using electric boilers, will require approximately 240 gigawatt hours of electricity per year from renewable sources. The program will significantly reduce carbon dioxide emissions associated with energy-intensive industrial processes, thereby strengthening the competitiveness of participating companies.

The initiatives will be implemented in sectors such as food and beverages, chemicals, manufacturing, tires, mining and other industrial fields, establishing electrification as one of the main drivers for advancing the decarbonization of industry.

With this award the Iberdrola Group reinforces its role as a strategic partner to industry in its electrification process, offering solutions that reduce exposure to fossil fuel price volatility and advance the sustainability and emissions reduction targets required by European regulations and the market.

Spain leads the ranking of countries with the most selected projects

The European auction, managed by the European Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency (CINEA), has selected 65 projects across ten European countries, with nearly €400 million in funding. Spain leads the call for proposals with 24 of the 65 awards.

In the case of the Iberdrola Group, the selected initiatives collectively amount to nearly €50 million in funding, representing approximately 35% of the total awarded in Spain and providing a significant boost to accelerate the electrification of industrial heating in the country.

In addition to reducing emissions the initiatives will enable participating companies to move toward more efficient, competitive and resilient energy models, thanks to long-term contracts that provide stability and visibility regarding the cost of decarbonized heat.

The implementation of these projects includes long-term energy supply agreements (Power Purchase Agreements or PPAs) that will mobilize more than 150 megawatts of renewable energy. These initiatives are in addition to two other PPAs signed by the company in Spain with companies in the metallurgical and data center sectors, which together represent another 90 megawatts of renewable energy.
