Iberdrola España, in its commitment to promoting and facilitating access to electric cars, has reached 10,000 charging points in operation in Spain, a charging network that could already serve 1,000,000 electric vehicles. The company, firmly convinced of the energy transition and that emissions-free mobility that is also more efficient is possible, installed its first charging point in 2016. Today, 10 years later, it is the leader in charging in all power segments.

"Electric mobility is already a reality, and the electrification of the sector is advancing at an increasing pace."

During the inauguration of the Electric Vehicle Fair at Plaza de Colón in Madrid, which took place today, Friday, Iberdrola España CEO Mario Ruiz-Tagle stated that "electric mobility is already a reality, and the electrification of the sector is advancing at an increasing pace. Electric cars can now be seen every day in any location, and the charging network allows for traveling across the country in a much more affordable way than with fossil fuels and without emissions."

Iberdrola España's public charging network makes travel throughout the country and on all types of roads possible, adapting to user needs, allowing everything from charging 80% of the battery in less than 15 minutes to slower charging for longer stops, such as when shopping, enjoying a recreational or shopping centre or working.

The company currently has more than 2,700 high-power points in operation, 1,300 of which are ultra-fast, operated by Iberdrola | bp pulse, an partnership created in December 2023 by Iberdrola España and bp, the leading ultra-fast charging company at service stations in Spain, to drive the expansion of ultra-fast charging infrastructure.

All of them use 100% green energy from renewable sources with a guarantee of origin, which, in addition to advancing electrification, promotes the transition to a fossil fuel independent system.

Iberdrola España is accompanying this roll-out of Spain's largest charging infrastructure with its electric mobility app, the highest rated in the industry with more than 400,000 users. This app lets users do essential charging management such as locating nearby charging points, checking their status in real time, making reservations and receiving notifications when charging is complete.

In recent months, the company has also focused on improving its customers’ charging experience by launching new access methods and services such as 'Autocharge', which allows you to plug in your car and start charging directly, RFID cards to start charging with a free card without needing to use the app, the deployment of POS terminals and payment methods without the need to register in the app at all chargers, and new subscription plans to save on charging.

As for the app’s evolution, Iberdrola España has recently added new features to improve information and experience, such as a new route planner to reduce charging time when travelling, a report on historical consumption and money spent on charging, personalised advice for new electric vehicle users, photos of charging points and stations, travel planning suggestions and a new user community with useful information and the latest news and developments in the industry.

Innovation in electric mobility in Spain

Iberdrola España has one of the leading centres for research into electric car charging: the Smart Mobility Laboratory  in the city of Bilbao. The lab tests the latest innovation projects in electric car charging.

The aim of this pioneering facility is not only to test the viability of integrating new models of electric chargers into its own charging point management system but also to update the devices that the company already has on the market with constant charging and communication tests.

The laboratory has a total power of 400 kW and 30 charging points with different powers to test all types of systems: domestic, public and business installations.
