Alimerka and Iberdrola España join forces to install 238 charging points for electric vehicles in supermarkets
The Asturian supermarket chain Alimerka and Iberdrola España have reached an agreement to install charging points with different power ratings for electric vehicles in the three autonomous communities where the Asturian distribution group currently has supermarkets: Asturias, Castile and León, and Galicia. This initiative highlights both companies' commitment to sustainable mobility.
The project involves the installation of 238 ultra-fast chargers, located in the car parks of 59 of the company’s supermarkets (42 in Asturias, 15 in Castile and León and 2 in Lugo). The charging points will have different power ratings to adapt to users’ different needs. Alimerka customers will be able to charge for 100 kilometres in just three minutes or for up to 45 minutes for those who want to fully charge their vehicle while shopping. The stations will be powered by 100% green energy from renewable sources with a guarantee of origin, which strengthens independence from fossil fuels and therefore significantly reduces the impact on the environment.
Through this agreement, Alimerka is advancing its commitment to comprehensive sustainability in its business activity and to reducing its carbon footprint, contributing to the promotion of electric cars at its supermarkets and offering its customers a practical service that improves their shopping experience. Iberdrola España continues to accelerate its strategy of transitioning mobility towards an emissions-free system and its sustainable mobility plan. A pioneer in this field since 2016, it plans to install 100,000 electric chargers by 2025 in homes, businesses and on public roads. Its public infrastructure design is being developed on motorways and corridors as well as in cities and small towns with the goal of having at least one fast charging station every 50 kilometres.
The high-power charging points will be developed and operated by Iberdrola | bp pulse, a 50-50 strategic alliance between the two companies that is currently the leader in ultra-fast public charging infrastructure in Spain and Portugal, where they already have more than 1,400 operational points. The company remains committed to bringin electric mobility to everyone, developing an ultra-fast charging network that allows users to travel with complete confidence, both on their daily journeys and on long-distance trips.
“For Alimerka, this initiative is another sign of our commitment to sustainable mobility and to our customers. This agreement will enable us to have many more charging points for electric vehicles at our supermarkets, offering a very practical service and improving their shopping experience," says Paula Díaz-Caneja Gutiérrez, Alimerka's Head of Environment.

“This agreement reinforces Iberdrola España’s electric mobility strategy and highlights the need for collaboration between all stakeholders on the road to electrification and towards economic efficiency and improving air quality in our cities and towns. The Alimerka group is a clear partner in advancing the implementation of charging points at places where users go during their day so that they can charge their vehicles while shopping or working’, explained David Martínez, CEO of Iberdrola Energía España, a company that is part of Iberdrola España.
“Thanks to agreements like this, we can continue to make progress towards our goal of ensuring that the charging infrastructure is where it’s really needed. Making it easy for people to quickly charge their electric vehicles while they shop is a clear example of how decarbonising mobility offers simple, accessible solutions that are within everyone's reach", explains Pablo Pirles, managing director of Iberdrola | bp pulse.
