Handball goalkeeper Nicole Wiggins, new Iberdrola ambassador
Iberdrola España continues to reinforce its commitment to equality through sport. The company has welcomed handball player Nicole Wiggins into its Iberdrola Ambassadors programme, which brings together a selection of 35 athletes and role models who promote visibility and female leadership in sport, and whose achievements the company actively promotes through media and social networks.
Nicole plays as a goalkeeper and stands out for her rapid development and consistency between the posts. She trained at Club Balonmano Base Villaverde and took an important step forward in her career when she joined KH-7 Granollers in 2019, where she established herself over four seasons. Her outstanding performances earned her a call-up to the national team for the 2022 European Championship as an emergency replacement following injuries to first-choice goalkeepers Silvia Navarro and Mercedes Castellanos. During the tournament, she became a key player for the Spanish national team, the Guerreras, with whom she also won gold at the 2022 Mediterranean Games in Oran.
In 2023, she began her international career with OGC Nice Handball in the French league, gaining valuable competitive experience before returning to Spain in 2025. She currently plays for Super Amara Bera Bera, one of the leading clubs in the Guerreras Iberdrola League. At national team level, she has competed in major tournaments such as the European Championship, the Pre-Olympic Tournament and the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, where she has stood out for her character, leadership and sporting maturity despite her young age.
“Being an Iberdrola Ambassador is a great motivation to continue giving my best and to inspire more women and young people. Women’s sport is a diamond in the rough, and Iberdrola España is one of the few companies willing to polish it, as demonstrated by the support it has provided to so many female athletes over the past decade. Their commitment, together with the effort and dedication of sports professionals, is breaking down many of the barriers we face and making it increasingly possible for us, as athletes, to focus solely on our performance on the court,” said Wiggins.
Nicole Wiggins thus joins the Iberdrola Ambassadors family, which includes leading figures in Spanish sport such as Alexia Putellas, Teresa Perales, Carolina Marín, María Pérez, Adiaratou Iglesias, Loida Zabala, Ana Peleteiro, Paula Leitón, Sofía Val and Paula Badosa, among other elite athletes.
More than two decades promoting equality through sport
Since 2016, Iberdrola España has been the leading promoter of women’s sport in Spain. It currently supports 35 national federations through its sponsorship agreements and lends its name to more than 100 competitions. Over the past decade, its commitment has helped increase female participation in these federations by more than 80%, bringing the total number of female members to nearly 820,000.
Handball is one of the sports that has gained the greatest media visibility thanks to the company’s support in recent years. The Guerreras Iberdrola League, in particular, has become one of the most established competitions in Spanish women’s sport and, since the beginning of Iberdrola España’s sponsorship, has featured a live weekly broadcast on Teledeporte.
Each year, Iberdrola España presents the Iberdrola Supera Awards to recognise and promote the best initiatives launched in Spain to advance gender equality through sport. Each award includes prize funding of €50,000, with categories including Supera Base, Supera Competición, Supera Inclusión, Supera Social, Supera Difusión and Supera Impulso Rural.
The company’s commitment also extends to Paralympic sport. Since 2005, it has collaborated with the Spanish Paralympic Committee’s ADOP Plan (Support Plan for Paralympic Sport), with the aim of providing athletes with the best possible conditions to prepare and compete successfully at the highest level.
In addition, through its Foundation and in partnership with the Spanish Paralympic Committee, Iberdrola España offers university and postgraduate scholarships to Paralympic athletes benefiting from the ADOP Plan. This initiative aims to support athletes’ professional development and facilitate their integration into the labour market once their sporting careers have concluded.
Finally, it is worth noting that the company is also a partner in the Universo Mujer programme, a comprehensive initiative designed to promote the development and advancement of women in society through actions that drive social transformation based on the values of women’s sport.
